New Skins Thread

Post by Metzer » Sat Apr 03, 2010 12:43 pm

I've been playing around with the graphics files for EUO, and decided to make some skins.

Everyone is welcome to use this skin if they want. I would of course appreciate feedback. If there is interest, I might spend some more time on this one or crank out a few more. http://roguevendor.com/euo/skin-greengold.zip

I'm not including any copyright files or anything because I'm not a jerk. But officially: free for non-profit entertainment use only; license required for any other use. And if anyone makes anything based on this, I'd appreciate a copy of the derivative work for my own enjoyment.

Also: I've found several old skins on the EUO website, here: http://swut.net/euo/files/skins/. They are in an old format, and designed for a smaller resolution, but they're there if anyone wants them.

anytime you edit client.cfg make sure euo and launcher are not running
you also need to know where you installed euo
euo may be installed in:
c:/games/euo
c:/euo
c:/program files/euo
c:/program files x86/euo

about skins
skins go into subfolders in the pics folder in your euo folder, ie where you installed euo
there are 3 files:
- bg.png - the main skin png
- bg_t.png - the background for the sun
- skin.cfg - a txt file specifying where everything goes - expert use only - see below

where to put skins and how they are named
the skin name is the name of the sub folder within the euo pics folder, eg
c:/euo/pics/xxx
xxx is the skin name

how to change skins
quit euo & launcher! client.cfg may not save otherwise
install skins into euo pics folder, making sure they are in their own directory (see above)
edit client.cfg
edit the line that says skin=
put
skin=xxx
where xxx is the skin name / name of folder in pics
if there is no line skin= then simply add one

how to make a new skin - simplest method
make a new folder in pics, let's call it myskin
if you want a left stats skin, copy bg.png and bg_t.png from euo/pics into euo/pics/myskin
if you want a right stats skin copy bg.png, bg_t.png and skin.cfg from euo/pics/blue2 into euo/pics/myskin
use whatever paint program to edit the 2 png files
edit client.cfg
set/change skin= line to
skin=myskin

about skin.cfg
if you want right stats skin copy the skin.cfg from euo/pics/blue2 and put it in your new skin subfolder
if you want left stats you don't even need a skin.cfg - default is to have stats on left
if you're ambitious and want chat up the top, you can edit skin.cfg and figure it out yourself - the blue2 skin.cfg is commented

I like the skin and the custom world image. Considering adding it, but feeling really lazy.

Like Picasso, Hysterical is going through his "Blues Phase" it is a well known stage for artists, and tends to be an era that artistic buffs seek.

here you go (just a quick draft cause its late in the evening):
20100627-231915.jpg
excuse the jpg-file quality.

Edit:
sun/moon cycle could be more to the right.
for the skin just use blue2, stone or anything with the statbox at the right and flip it with photoshop.
# this is where the main window goes
xoffset=17
yoffset=127

# statbox
sbsx=559
sbsy=137

# message box
msgboxsx=20
msgboxsy=20
msgboxwidth=650

# mini map
mmx=687
mmy=17

# mini map dungeon name
mmtx=738
mmty=116

# where the sun and moon start - must be at the top
sunx=163

GoD Skin:
Make sure to rename the files. The first one should be "bg.png" and the second smaller one for the sun/moon-cycle "bg_t.png".
Image
bg_t.png
Last but not least create a skin.cfg with the following parameters:
skin.cfg wrote:xoffset=17
yoffset=17
sbsx=559
sbsy=24
msgboxsx=20
msgboxsy=492
msgboxwidth=650
mmx=687
mmy=487
mmtx=738
mmty=586
sunx=163

Is there a way to change the font colors? Or are we limited to light text on dark?

Different colors usually mean something depending on what menu or where encountered in your dialogue section. It might be able to be changed but damned if I know in what configuration dat file.

Ummm... Kinda dumb question but I am having problems making a skin load when using Winblows 7. Works fine on my XP puter, only difference I had to do was change the ownership of the client.cfg file to actually edit it AND save it... Anyone successful at accomplishing this task? Did I miss something? (Please note I did make it work on my XP puter so I did follow the directions :P~)

@Keighn and aftermarketgirl: To my knowledge the font color is hardcoded and cannot be changed by any cfg-file.
@Akyla: Make sure the name in the client.cfg for the skin is exactly the same as the folder name under ..\euo\pic\ where you have saved the skin. Other issue might be missing or corrupted skin.cfg (and bg.png, bg_t.png) in the skin folder. That's my guess at least. Good luck

Eh, thanks but I triple checked everything to no avail. Only thing I did differently was change the ownership of the client.cfg file so I could actually save the edit. Just wondering if this was the case or do I have to run in administrator privileges or some crud?

Just copy the euo installation folder from your XP computer to your Win7. You can copy/install it on a USB flash drive as well and play it where ever you want.

Figured it out. Just run EUO with admin rights. Works perfect!
