digging mines thread

Post by eggmceye » Sun Feb 14, 2010 9:24 pm

first off, not sure where I'm taking this, but it's part of the whole 'trying to make euo less about grinding already' theme for 2010 because mmorpgs are trash!
just trying an experimental 'mining' temporary map - grab your shovel and mining pick and go and dig out your own dungeon
to start one, just hack away with a mining pick at a mountain that has no ore - keep searching till you find a 'collapsed mine' - there can be a max of 5 open at a time
other than needing a shovel and a mining pick, the instructions are in the mine itself, on a book stand - look at it - then figure the rest out yrself
Hello and welcome to my terrible mining experiment.

You will need a mining pick and a shovel.

You can dig out a brown rock wall with a mining pick.

You can upgrade a rock wall to a stone wall with a shovel. Likewise you can upgrade a dirt floor to a tiled floor with a shovel.

Sometimes you get boulders left behind. You can push them around with a shovel and even stack them to make new rock walls!

Plan your dungeon carefully children. Also it is safe for now as there are no balrons or earthquakes or caveins. There also isn't any xp or treasure other than a few gems!

PS the mine is not saved and will destroy itself and disappear after 30 mins if nobody visits it! So don't be precious about it!

here some things that may or may not develop with mining

- replace existing mining with experimental mining
- actually finding ore - in actual veins that span tiles
- finding gold nugs, gems
- spawning zorms
- finding ancient buried prefab dungeon ruins and digging them out in a archaeology kinda manner
- finding petrified items or monsters (ie statues)
- saving the temporary mine maps if they are particularly good
- allowing more flexibility in turning the map into a dungeon - ie more tiles, better terraforming
- finding streams or lava
- disturbing some balron in his pit

Mining Picks and shovels might need to be able to break; currently they're indestructable while in the mine. With a little help I managed to dig out an entire mine and didn't lose a single pick. Sure it took more hours than you would care to think about but at least I set out and did it. I'd say perhaps an average of 80-100 gems of each type were mined in this way. Next time I'll try something more creative.

the mine entrance is now placed under you when you discover it - theory being it is placed on the grass so you don't need a grapple to enter it

of course the entrance will be in the mountains if you have already grappled onto a mountain and found the entrance there

will fix this properly one day but needs a client patch

If you can, Make it to where each player can only get 1 mine at a time. Trying to get 100mining i ended up like 4 mines in a minute. Or atleast make it harder to open mines perchaps? Just trying to avoid the chance of people getting angry cause 1 person has like 5 mines opened and that person is just trying to get more ore.

Maybe they automatically collapse if the entire thing is mine out. I really got to try this new mining patch as I was a huge fan of the first implementation. one of the few to mine out the entire thing and all that.

minigame idea:

- you are trapped in a mine and have 10 mins to turn it into a fort before hordes of enemies overrun you - bit like DTK but you make the fort and there is no ressing there say
- you can build destructible barricades that enemies can attack and destroy
- switches and portcullis
- traps

(you know what the prob with reg is - no body wants to do anything other than grind because there is no xp in it for them)

While your at it why not add whirlpools to deep sea tiles that bring you to a random island filled with mobs scaled to your level.
"I know that you knew that I know, but did you know I knew that you knew I know?" Cassanova Frankenstein 'Mystery Men'

"Buddah, Zeus, God...one of you guys do something!" & " Help Satan! You owe me!" - Professor Farnsworth 'Futurama'

"Hmm hmm hmm, when you do things right, people wont be sure you've done anything at all." Probably a computerized space probe that collided with 'God' 'Futurama'
