PD LoTL server / ladder?

Post by Catherine »

LoTL = Living off The Land - old rules apply!

Simply means - you use what you can find, and no trading. Spell books are purely based on drops / chests. NPCs don't talk to you, townes aren't enterable [i.e. no :cheese: ing quests for 50+ free levels], you can't pick up anything a player drops barring from ghosts and so on. Dig up the old threads on it. Pro tip: finding a vamp weapon, or making one, is one huge step to surviving past 75. Yes: cursed amulets are the worst thing that you can find.

Given the huge :cheese: with main stream PD now [I missed the whole IVPY drama, and new maps, but hey - I read about them just now!] and the farming that goes into the ladder, I think this might be healthy.

Old school, old harsh rules: no stones unless you find one, no using :cheese: to pro-level. You luck into a GP spell book or vamp rondell, you're set: otherwise, level 75 + remort is a long & tough road. None of this "spam X spell to raise skill in towne -> hit popular leveling spot -> :cheese: xp until eyes bleed and ranking board updates".

Hmm. Does Keigh still play? He's about the only one apart from me who loved this idea :P

p.s. Feel free to make it PvP enabled. Muahahahha. [Nod to Akyla there. RIP]

What about noob island, and Town Portals take you into towns, can you use blanks that you find?

Just a few basic questions...

I must admit trialling LOTL for the pd monthly would be interesting. I don't want to make a new server for it though, so it would have to be a measured/enforced option. I've played morrowind LOTL and it really breathed some life into it.

Rules in addition to monthly ladder rules:
* no buy/sell/trade/bank
* no twinking - no /trade, and can't pick up items on the ground that don't have your name on them - ie only allowed to pick up drops from your kills only
* quests are ok but give no XP
* trainers are ok
* quests give 0 xp

Notes:
* spells are sold by trainers and lotl flagged chars can buy from trainers
* new chars on pd start off flagged LOTL but there is a helpful npc at newbie island that tells you to turn it off with /lotl

update:
Update: it's live - you can make lotl chars now. Next month's pd ladder will require LOTL flagged on.

here's a problem: drops. Under the current rules, if you drop an item, it doesn't have your name on it, so by LOTL rules, you can't pick up an item you just dropped. Maybe items you drop when flagged as LOTL should have your name on it, but that is a bit smelly.

You have to drop items to uncurse them.

You have to drop item near brazier in shrine to figure out if it's cursed or not.

Yeah, but you can wear only wearable items, you need to use shrine to check if other stuff is cursed or not.

Wow! Glad to know people liked LOTL. Good to see you again Cat. I've been sick with some horrendous flu for this week so I haven't been on. I'd love to see an LOTL server with ladder. And a PVP enforced server is even more awesome. With priests coming into being this would make things very interesting.

I had thought of altering many of the current maps to an apocalyptical theme where all the towns are basically destroyed and considered additional hunting grounds. I suppose NPCs would be considered nonexistant. I'll be leaving for Kansas on Saturday to visit my brother til January (spending our birthdays and holidays together). I should have plenty of time to work on ideas there with his cable connection; albeit it is on windows vista. :P

Please let me know on the developement on this.

Heh, I should amend and say playing LoTL by EGO rules might make gaming even harder.

I'm excited by lotl too. Should PVP be flagged on for the ladder? Why not - but it would be uncool if a non LOTL player ganked a weaker LOTL guy. I don't to make too many changes at once, so maybe PVP LOTL for november.

All that I have to do is revise tome drops, and come up with a workaround for the drop problem - I think I will trial this: when a lotl player drops an item (to uncurse it, etc) it is marked as being owned for them for a couple of mins. This time frame is not very accurate usually tho, but it can definitely be at least a minute or two. Quests will be available for LOTL players - even tho it defies pure lotl there are quite a few things you need that you can only get from quests.

I plan of making Oct ladder LOTL. Priests will be done by then.

Do consider scrapping the traps on chests that do more damage than your maximum hp seeing as quite a lot of consumables are available in chests.

Love the idea of LoTL.

I'm diggin the LOTL hype, but one quick question, are the tome drops going to be monster specific like they are for KXC, IJO, etc. or will they be random with low circle spells for easier mobs?
Can someone buy me a res stone?

Hopefully keyed to appropriate level of mobs/chests; unless we're able to start searching bookcases, libraries, barrels, and other weird objects for random items.

What is going to happen is that all spells will be sold by trainers now, not as tomes, and LOTL players will be able to buy from trainers.

Trainers?

As in something like the University? You going to extend it and put up some spell guys in there? That would be interesting. Something new done/added to something old. :dance:
