Read & understand installation instructions carefully!

PREFACE / BACKGROUND UNDERSTANDING
i) this 3d euo is not a new game, it is an alternative client which you use to play on the old servers with your old characters.
ii) euo3d installs over the top of your current euo installation, but doesn't replace anything so you can go back to old euo anytime if you don't like 3d or it doesn't work
iii) this uses opengl 1.4 with extensions - this means you need a half decent 3d card with latest drivers! (3d card means 3d hardware, you don't actually need a separate card - I still talk like I was using a voodoo2) If you can play half life 2 then you can probably play euo3d.
iv) if your 3d card is crappier than a geforce3 then expect it to crash on load - this means you don't have shader support - you can disable it and try again. Read on.

NEW INSTALLATION
1) download: http://swut.net/euo/files/moagl-full.zip
2) unzip (PRESERVING DIRS) into your euo dir (probably c:/euo) - you need euo installed first
3) run moagl.exe

This is the bare minimum to play. But there is some option configuration which may be worth doing!

UPDATING
1) Just run the patcher! Infact don't even do that - the patcher should patch itself!

Changing your resolution!
You can play in any res in windowed mode + normal res's in fullscreen. 800x600 is the default.

edit client.cfg
add:

Code: Select all
res_x=1024
res_y=768

If you play on a lcd in fullscreen you should use the native res (often 1280x1024 for a 17"). Set the res in the above two lines. Some widescreen laptops use 1280x800. This is up to you to figure out.

If you wan't to euo3d from the launcher, do this:
edit client.cfg
add:
Code: Select all
exe=moagl.exe

(if the line exe= is already there, just change it to moagl.exe)

CONTROLS
There are a number of keyboard commands to move the camera around.

ctrl-u - move up
ctrl-d - move down
ctrl-i - move in
ctrl-o - move out
, or numpad / - turn left
. or numpad * - turn right
shift-ctrl-r - reset to default camera position
NEW ctrl-z - hide the stats pane
NEW shift-ctrl-u - slide camera up - for fine tuning of centering your av - you probably won't need this
NEW shift-ctrl-d - slide camera down

PLAYING IN 2D MODE

Use ctrl-2 and ctrl-3 to switch between 2d and 3d modes. 2d mode is just like old euo with more real-estate and no border. 2d mode still uses opengl & your 3d hardware to draw.

WHAT TO DO IF IT CRASHES ON LOAD - updated Jan 25, 2008
Moagl should now detect whether your 3d hardware can do the death shader. But it may still crash.
1) update your video drivers
2a) if it still crashes then download this:
http://swut.net/euo/files/gltest.zip
2b) run gltest.exe - post what happens.
2c) run glewinfo.exe - email me the text file you get - glewinfo.txt in your euo dir.

but in any case: !!! UPDATE YOUR VIDEO DRIVERS !!!. If you are running 3d apps you should always have good recent stable drivers, especially if you have a card you plugged in yourself. But then again, if you have one of those, you wouldn't be playing euo would you :roll:

FPS ISSUES
You can see your fps in the top left corner by pressing shift-f. It should hover around 20 (well that is what mine does, with a 5 year old p4 with a radeon 9800).

If it is any worse than 20 consider disabling the fps limiter.

edit client.cfg
add:
Code: Select all
no_fps_limit=1

save & close.

If I do this I get up to 150fps.

KNIOWN ISSUES
* secret doors you need to search for appear on top
* items on walls appear on top - it's ok but not awesome
* mouse doesn't work

update history
0.24 - May 9 - more bugs fixed
0.23 - May 8 - fixed glowing, tints, statues, better 2d mode real-estate, tweaked 3d cam, added vertical 3d cam dolly, items on walls, standing on a blockin tile flattens that tile
0.22 - May 5 2010 - absorbed all chgs since Aug 2009 except glowing and tinted entities, mouse & properly fixed the intro pages
0.21 - Aug 28 - absorbed changes from moa 0.93
0.19 - June 17 - updated with latest changes from moa 0.91a
0.19 - May 22 - absorbed race changes
0.18 - April 3 2009 - Absorbed changed
0.17 - October 2 - Absorbed a lot of changes from moa, added book support, improved minimap location, fixed lots of bugs
0.16 - June 23 - Added compressed map support and mini map.
0.15 - May 4 - Added popups, help screen, key remapping and other changes from moa 0.83 and 0.84
0.14 - Feb 23 - Fixed minimise bug. All changes from moa 0.82.
0.13 - Feb 16 - has support for md2 models, though none are used. Maybe fixed flashing intro screen - I can't replicate on my setup. Integrated all changes from moa 0.81 patch
0.12 - Jan 27 - adds shaded lighting, fixed opening screen flashing (hopefully), optimisations & general code cleanup - did find and remove one actual bottleneck so should run a lot faster on computers where the cpu is crappier than the vid card. Should run faster anyay - getting up to 140fps on my p4 2.4g / radeon 9800 - however it still runs awful on my intel 945gm laptop, sorry rusty. That is a really shitty card.
0.11 - Jan 25 - this update attempts to detect shader capability, tries to be more stable and fixes targeting and shooting when the camera is rotated.

Crashes when I try to start it up, I've tried all that you have listed, suck as the shader/launcher etc. I use a NVIDIA Geforce FX 5200.

Egg, I am impressed with the hard work you put in. I think this is a great accomplishment.

Thank you.

P.S. Now I have a good excuse to go buy a faster PC now.

Works extremely well on dial up. I worked the cfg file so i can use a higher res than the 800x600. Got the launcher to work fine. I'm running this on the following:

Pentium4 1.6 gigahz. Nvidia GeForce FX 5700XT vid card. 693 meg of memory ram. Windows98se. DirectX9.0

I'm not the most computer savvy so whatever else I don't know. Here's a screenie among the dozens I've taken.

Ehh, The 3d version isn't for me, functionally it doesn't seem bad though.

ATI Rage Pro turbo AGP 2x
I'm going to assume it's a crappy one since my card is discontinued. Even though I don't have any 3d games now, it did handle ragnarok when I had it on here. And other such crappy 3d games that I've tried out. Yet it continues to shut down before it even really opened.

it would be great if i could bind the window rotation buttons to the left and right key pad buttons, so i could actually move around in an over-the-shoulder 3rd person perspective. just an idea

Very awesome egg, thank you.
But heres some things Ive noticed:
1.Targeting seems a little buggy in 3d mode, sometimes I wont target the mob until after they hit me
2. You can zoom the camera in past the level of the ground into darkness
3. If you pan up far enough all sprites become invisible
4. Zooming in and panning the camera down to get into a somewhat FPS mode is cool and looks exactly like Duke Nukem

Also, Im really impressed with how smoothly it transitions from 2D to 3D and back again, major kudos and congrats to you egg.

Yes I agree with Mordred, going into a first-person point of view is really cool. It'd be nice if the camera would hold that position so you could move around without constantly having to readjust the camera so you can see infront of you, just something to thing about

If you move the camera 180 from the starting position then you sit in chairs the wrong way. Not a big deal, just a cosmetic problem.

Sometimes i'm completely incapable of moving or doing anything all the while the monsters are braying the hell outta me. thus resulting in my death(which is annoying). I think this is just my shitty computer though, it has a GeForce FX5200 in it, although the rest is quite respectable for it's age.

it's also impossible to see my character behind trees without rotating the camera(see pic), which is not entirely a problem but a bit annoying nonetheless because enemies are hidden in the same manner.
Even at default camera angle it's impossible to see anything behind something (trees/walls and most blocking objects like signs)but the player/target's HP unless they are in the open.

Also, the white thingies that 'hold up' the bank sign in Sline aren't visible in 3d mode(you can see at the bottom left of the pic).

The not being able to see enemies thing is kind of more adventurous. I really don't see a problem with that.

The son of a bitch told me that I need alleg42.... guess I will have to hunt that shit down, although I am pretty sure that I have it already because I needed it to use the TES set for Elder Scrolls

Thanks to everyone who's tried it.

Can you post your cards and whether it's working or not? I want it to work for everybody. Since I don't have access to all the hardware I need to research why it may not work for some people.

I am going to think about making a direct x 9.0c version as I think open gl support is fading in windows. Which is a shame as it should be increasing for mac and linux.

3d cards that work:
* ati radeon 9800 (me)
* intel 945gm - cheap laptop card - works with shaders turned off
* Nvidia GeForce FX 5700XT (dest)
* GeForce FX5200 - devlin

here's a list of cards that are known not to work:
* NVIDIA Geforce FX 5200 (onyxt - seph?) - I think it should work, altho it is a poor card - it works for devlin! UPDATE YR DRIVERS
* ati rage pro - beren - this is a very old and crappy card

known problems:
* targeting - rotate camera breaks ctrl-up to shoot, you have to do ctrl-north
* shaders - aren't even enabled but still crashing some pc's - this needs much work and soon
* possible other targeting probs
* sitting in chairs & beds - I didn't put any work into this and probably won't - will stay as a 2d gimmick only I think
* sign posts - I took them out, and they still block. I took them out as if you think about it, it is hard to make them work in 3d.
* not seeing your av behind trees - split concensus, be nice option to draw the trees/walls transparently when they block your view though.
* missing alleg42.dll - it should be in your euo dir, it comes with euo
* screen needs to refresh more when waiting for connections, dying etc

revised todo list:
* better lighting - graduated lighting first, then maybe hardware shaded lighting if I get ambitious
* models for towns, forests, mountains
* party portraits - have map location and direction of player
* split chat/combat/messages in movable windows

I have an intel 915gm and it works with the shaders turned off, although the log in screen freaks out graphically.
