egg requests specific help thread

Post by eggmceye »

What I need right now is an awesome horse gallop sound as that is all that is holding mounts up

It needs to be a wav, like all other euo sound fx, probably have the sound of 4 hooves hitting the ground. This wav will be played over and over again for each step taken. It needs to sound as good as the step sounds in use now for foot.

I'd try sampling it from an emulated ultima 5 but suspect it won't sound as good as memory thinks it should.

They aint bad - bit low quality tho as is most stuff on the net.

The big problem is that the movement is too fast to play the whole sound before the next step is made so it sounds shit. I can fix that by making the wav not play till the old step sound is complete. To compound it, the sound must work for other player's steps. SO it's all turning into a drag. I should dig out u5 emulated to see what it was like there.

Simple solution that worked for U5:

Player - 1 step played / tile
Horse - 2 step played / tile

That was it - no fancy .wav's.

Horses got a double time step to give the illusion of speed. So instead of <step> it was <step> <slightly higher toned step> each tile. Quite literally 'clip-clop'. Even if 'clip-clop' suggests a downturn, it shouldn't. The initial one was the same as the player step, the second just a higher tone. It was also used in U6 (modified) and Savage Empire. To make it even simpler:

Don't even pretend to make a 'horsey' sound. Any double-step noise with an uptone at the end suggests speed, and the player automatically will link the sound to a 'horsey' one. Its the same principle as why people 'prefer' Coke or Pepsi when statistically 86% of people can't tell the difference on a blind taste test - a player's brain is hard-wired to accept the link of <horse sprite> and <low-up sound> anyhow.

Nothing more!

(oh, and btw. I stink of horse pee, muck and have to clean sheathes most days - horses don't sound like that, they have four gears, or six if you're doing dressage & are all fancy ;) Oh, and if you don't have to end a conversation with a friend with 'of course, we usually spray baby oil up there to help clean it out, but this time I had to really firk around to get the gunk out, and then wash it down with hot soapy water' then, well. )

Fyi - all penis gunk from mammals actually smells alike. Its odd. As far as I can tell, its the same bacteria that specialises in eating dead sperm and lubricants. Horses - dog - humans. My advice is to shower / day, as its not a particularily nice smell, and boy does it stick to your fingers.

p.s.

5.45am - 10.48pm days bite hard. If you have a partner, and s/he is into horses, leave now. Its just low paid hard work. >.<
