Meet the Fugitives!

Here's George and Jimmy:

These two fellows always seemed a bit out of place here to me, so I came up with a story for them. Enjoy!

Once upon a time Yrgo Puusappa Hiekkainen Laaksola and his son, Jaako (we'll call them George and Jimmy) had a carpentry shop in the northwest corner of Sandy Valley. George's wife, Maija took care of business matters and ran the storefront while George taught his son the art of woodworking and filled orders for the then-booming town.

One morning while outside cutting rough planks for his father, young Jimmy noticed a rabbit watching him. The rabbit seemed not to be afraid of him and after a while Jimmy thought he'd try to feed it a piece of carrot he had in his lunchsack. The rabbit gladly ate it and soon was visiting Jimmy every day. 'Haha, never thought I'd have a pet', thought he. 'Father says I'm not ready for the responsibility.'

After a while Jimmy noticed he could make friends with other creatures too. Horses, cows even vermin rats were friendly to him. His ablilty to tame wild creatures seemed natural and effortless. He never never told his parents about his skill however and kept his pets a secret. After finishing his chores for the day he would sneak out of town to find new creatures to make friends with. Soon there was nothing he could not tame.

Jimmy had an idea. 'If I could tame one of the wild tree-creatures, then it could help us greatly with our supply of wood. We'd have the best quality and never run out!'.

And so Jimmy accomplished what was unthinkable in the taming world; He tamed a Tree Ent. Or so he thought.

George was amazed at his sons' productivity. There was a seemingly endless supply of top quality timber that Jimmy could produce for him. Their customers were very pleased. Word spread and soon they had enough work for them for a year in advance. 'I don't know how you manage it son,' said George. 'But keep this up and we'll have to hire help!'

All was well. Jimmy was proud of himself for he had helped the family business and gained his father's approval. He also became a bit too trusting in his tree friend...

Instead of leading his Ent back into the forest outside of town after his duties were done at night, Jimmy thought he could save time by having it rest among the trees behind the shop.

One morning before dawn, his mother Maija went out into the yard because she thought she heard an unusual creaking sound. In the moonlight she saw a strange tree, oddly shaped. 'Was that tree always there?', she whispered to herself. She approached it, and as soon as she got close the tree let down a bough and struck her on top of the head, she let out a scream and fell to the ground.

Father and son awoke to the sound. 'Oh no!', Jimmy cried. He ran out to the backyard and saw his mother's lifeless body under the tree. 'Go away! Never return here!', he shouted. The Ent dissapeared into the darkness.

George soon followed. 'Maija', he sobbed, cradling her body.'What has happened to you?'. Through his tears Jimmy told his father everything, how he had tamed the Ent to work for him.

George said, 'I told you, you were not ready for the responsibility of owning a pet. And you thought you actually could tame the tree-beasts! You did not think what the creature would do to others'. Dismayed, George stared blanky for a while and said, 'We will bury her here where she fell, son. Say nothing about what has happened to anyone. They will never believe you.'

Time passed and some folks became suspicious of the dissapearance of Maija. George offered no explaination, just saying that she was gone now. A nosy customer noticed that the path leading into the backyard had a mound at its end. 'My god he's killed his wife and buried her in back of his shop!', he thought. Soon after, the town's guards were asking questions and inspecting the property.

George knew he had no choice but to flee so he and his son left in the night and headed south to the mountains. Through a cave they found an entrance to a strange land with hostile creatures. Black and firey dragons lurked there, as well as blood-red wyverns and golems. 'If we could find a place to survive we will be safe from persecution', said George. 'The townsmen will never look for us here.'

Jimmy said, 'I can do it. If you are near me then the creatures will leave you alone.'

Scouting ahead around a bend, Jimmy found a small patch of forest. Here they could build a home and be safe. He went back and escorted his father to the site.

George was terrified. 'Son, I trust you will not be careless and leave me to get devoured by these monsters!'

'Never will I leave your side', said Jimmy.

Together they cleared an area of trees to build a small house. Jimmy had the golems build basements and a pen for his pets and George continued to practice his art of woodcrafting. Occasionally he sold furniture to a Lord Brownthorne who's castle was nearby.

Marked as criminals, George and Jimmy would never leave Blood Moor.

Amazing story! Now I'll feel a slight pang of remorse and nostalgia every time I mercilessly slaughter this father and son.

I'm gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!"

Thanks guys, I don't have any plans for more atm. For a while I'd been thinking about backstories for Fred and the Fugitives (hehe sounds like a band name) and I finally got motivated to write 'em.

Maybe the map will get updated someday and they become quest NPCs of sorts. I always thought Bloodmoore could use a quest or two.

Forgot to show a pic of George's old shop in Sandy Valley:

Follow the path into the backyard and there's Maija's unmarked grave:
