LaughingCoyote's Animal Taming Guide

If you happen to have reasonably high defense (50+)and magic resistance (500)then getting the pet dragon that you want is pretty easy if you're willing to invest the time into it. The aim of the game is tame your way up to 100 taming using monsters that can't hurt you because of your defense or MR. This lets you semi-macro taming - just keep pressing f9 while you read the paper or something. Sometimes this means squeezing as much training as you can out of a monster - remember that you can train up to 15 lvls past the monster, it is just slower that way. I find it is also easier to semi-tame (grey) a bunch of monsters first, then go through them again so that you can use shift-f9 instead.

So here is a list of the monsters with the skill level required:

0-5 : Rabbits, cows and horses. Find them randomly around the continent map or in towns like Dryden or the Resort.
5-10: Rats, giant rats. Nord jail should have plenty, as well as the old mine.
10-15: Bats.
15-20: Gremlins. There's a whole bunch of them in a mine in Mountain Pass.
20-25: Goblins, orcs, goblin veterans.
25-30: Orc brutes, goblin elites.
30-35: Half orcs.
35-40: Fel orcs.
40-45: Trolls, Mongbats.
45-50: Hill giants, cyclops.
50-55: Ogres.
55-65: Snow ogres.
65-80: Minotaurs.
80-85: Ice ettins, imps.*
85-90: Crocodiles. Crocodiles found in and around Pride's Fall
90-95: Werewolves. Werewolves are hidden in Snowy Island.
95-100: Hydras.**
100: Drakes!



*The only level where you can't avoid ranged monsters.

** For Fighters,Rogues and Mages, even with high MR, unless you are willing to use a lot of pots, it's probably better to stick with Werewolfs until you reach 100. For Mages who can Vas Mani, Hydras should be quicker.

QUICK TAMING GUIDE:

0-21 : Cows (Arena & Domain)
20-41: Orcs (Kazadoom)
40-61: Troll (Kazadoom)
45-66: Cyclops (Kazadoom)
50-71: Ogres (Kazadoom)
65-86: Minotaurs (Minotaur Halls)
85-100: Crocodiles (Prides Fall)
100: Drakes! (Valley of Trolls)

! Metalvores will eat any ore/ingot (regular, copper, silver, gold, blackrock, ZINC!!) but will not touch brass.

Small note about taming:
Feed the EVIL RED monster until it is NEUTRAL GRAY and do this till all those possible mobs are exhausted. Then go back and retame those mobs until they are TAMED GREEN and your pet. Continue and the older ones tames will turn GOOD BLUE, good aligned until they just disappear.

This is the double-dipping taming technique. A harmed mob or boss can't be tamed so this avoids that little hiccup.

There are a few items that you can craft for your pet to help it become a little more resilient.

At 60% Enchanting you can craft:
Pet HP Wand -- Use this on your pet to permanently increase its health by 20%

At 82% Enchanting you cn craft:
Pet INT Wand -- Use this on your pet to permanently increase its intelligence by 20%

And there are items you can purchase for Adamantium coins in the Cash Shoppe:
*Note: A bag of 20 Adamantium Coins costs $2.00 (that's 10 cents an addy coin)*

Pet Transfer Deed -- Allow the bearer of this deed to have a pet transferred to them. (30 Adamantium coins [$3.00])
Steel Pet Rune -- Works just like a portable stable! Swap your pets in and out from anywhere! (20 Adamantium coins [$2.00])
Iron Pet Rune -- Works just like a portable stable! Swap your pets in and out from anywhere! (30 Adamantium coins [$3.00])

SLASH COMMANDS AND PET COMMANDS:

Once you have a pet, use /petname to name it.
/petname "newname"
ie.. /petname ThuderStrike

Use the following commands to order it around:

stay : pet will stay and not follow it's owner at all
follow : normal follow and attack mode - the pet is rather aggressive
heel : pet will follow but not attack unless provoked
guard : pet will follow but only attack enemies that are attacking you
wander : pet will wander around and do whatever it likes!
leash X : X is the distance the pet will stray from you when in guard mode, eg leash 3
spells : use it to choose whether i) a pet only casts spells ii) pet only fights physically or iii) both, which is default behaviour - note that this does not affect AI of a pet without spells

A warning about 'stay' : a pet will slowly lose loyalty if you tell it to stay and it's on a different map level to its owner, with the exception to this being if the pet is in its master's house. The pet will of course get hungry and may starve.

Pet Transfers

To transfer a pet, use
/transferpet playername


to move the pet to a new player. The target player will need to have a pet transfer deed in their inventory before the transfer may proceed (simply put.... The Player who wants the Pet NEEDS to have the Pet Transfer Scroll in their Inventory), which may be bought for adamantium coins. The bond timer is not reset, so it would be wise to transfer the pet after it has bonded. The target player should also either not have a pet, or have their current pet stabled before the the transfer takes place. It is not possible to transfer a pet with non standard spells.

OTHER PET INFORMATION:

Overview
Offer food or items on various monsters to tame them. Feed them in the same way to keep them happy and gain their loyalty. Let them kill other monsters to gain experience, grow stronger and even evolve.

Taming
Pets are generally acquired by taming wild creatures. Many critters are tamable; maybe about 70% of non-undead.

Offer food (shift e) to attempt to tame a creature. Start on rabbits and cows, then move on to rats and other weak dungeon critters, then goblins and other humanoids.

Some creatures require you to use an item (shift u) on the creature instead. Think of it as offering the item to the creature.

Players are allowed to only have one active pet at a time. If you currently have a pet and attempt to train another, your current pet will disappear shortly after you tame a new pet. You stable a pet, and then train a new one. You can swap active and stabled pets for 500 gp.

Note: the taming skill will only increase if you are within 5% of the minimum skill to tame a creature and no more than 15% over the minimum skill. If your taming skill isn't increasing, then go tame something harder! Your taming skill will also increase when you feed your pet.

Diet
Having gotten a pet, it must be kept fed in order to keep it happy. To feed, simply offer food or items to the pet just as you did to tame it in the first place.

All creatures have a preferred diet. Most creatures are carnivores, some are herbivores (e.g. rabbit) and some are omnivores (e.g. rat). Some critters have a favourite food (a treat), which makes taming easier and boosts loyalty. E.g. rats prefer cheese, and rabbits favour carrots.

The Zorn is the only metalivore (metal eater) in EUO. Offer (shift u) to feed your zorn metal items. It doesn't have a favourite food but will eat any metal ingot, any medium or heavy armour, metal ores, etc. It will not eat weapons or shields though.

Some pets will only eat one type of food, specific to that creature. Some examples of specific foods:
sulphur for hellspawn
clear potions for water demons

Finally, pets digest food and get hungry a little faster than players do.

Stables
There are stables located in Strangiato. For the modest sum of 500 gp, you can leave an active pet in the stables. You can thus have two pets tamed at once, one pet in the stables, and a second pet active.

Pet Runes
You can also buy pet runes, which are portable stables, with adamantium coins. These pet runes allow you to have four pets tamed at once and also allow you to switch between them without having to go back to Strangiato each time.

Special Pet Related Abilities
You can buy the pet attack ability from the University for a paltry sum of money. Use this ability (via the shift-c command) to command your pet to attack your currently targeted enemy. Useful for the ranged weapon wielding hunter.

Pet tomes
It is possible to unlearn spells from pets and teach them new ones. At Strangiato a spell known by a pet can be unlearned (ie. deleted) for 999gp, or a spell can be unlearned and saved as a pet tome for 9999gp. Not all spells can be saved as a pet tome though. Read the pet tome to teach your pet the spell. Pets cannot learn more spells than they initially know and the owner must have the minimum taming skills required for the pet. A pet will lose spells they learned from pet tomes when they evolve.


Tactics to Tame a pet:
I generally pump up on DEF, wield a fighter weapon and go into tank stance, wield a shield, and get my HP up. This works for my basic taming of normal mobs up to crocodiles. If You want to tame magic wielding mobs (which I don't recommend unless you want it as a pet then use Magic Resistance). I don't recommend it for training taming because ranged and spell users move away from you making it far more time consuming unless you can corner them.

Now if you're harvesting Pet tomes most aren't too hard to do (with the exception of them moving). I will say that Nightmares can be a real pain in the ass if encountered in groups. A Nightmare turned Neutral Gray can get caught in an evil Nightmare's Flame Wind. That Neutral Mob will turn Good and attack the evil ones. Naturally, any damaged will be untamable so they can cause a mess fast. Make sure when they turn neutral they don't get struck by the attacks of others and either mellow the others away from it or just kill all and leave only one to tame. With enough skill you won't have a problem.

About the Spectral Reaper. I tame mine on snowy isle. I turn them neutral gray then get one to be my pet. Naturally, it will never move but I can go back to the NPC in strangiato named "Pet Tomes" and remove its spells just fine.

I can't think of much else at the moment except for tactics and spells on various pets.

avg dmg = Average Damage - I'm assuming for melee but it might include magical damage as well. I was surprised it was actually in the monster data but can be quite helpful for placement of mobs if you're undecided (map makers only obviously - maybe some usage in taming for optimum pet).

Odd Anomalies:
2x2 spectral reaper Can't move from where it was tamed.
Zombie Mobs cannot infect disease once tamed.

Some Mobs should Fly:
Wights - amped up ghost
Demi Lich (They're flying skulls or floating)

Cannot Tame:
U1 Skeletons
U4 Liches
Ancient Vampires
Undead Warriors
Skeleton Jester
Grateful Dead

I've just hit 95 taming and here's what i wanted to share:

After you get a few cows/rabbits/rats, you can go all the way to GM with any kind of fish (and sulphurous ash for some imps). I think i've used like 3k fish or something.

Change mobs every 5 taming unless the mobs are really bad. For my last 20 skill I went imp -> croc -> werewolf -> hydra -> back to werewolf -> alternate to hydras again..

Having somebody XJ the mobs certainly helps on casters that move around a lot.

Using doors really helps with mobs that move too.

Block skill + sentri shield made taming a lot more bearable. I only had 7ish block and it truly came in handy.

Also, if you're not lycan by the time you're looking to GM taming, be prepared to go lycan and take the quest to cure yourself. It's worth it for the faster skill gain.

Edit: 95 to 95.8 took an hour of taming hydras. Prepare... for... suffering...

can you put heal other and put it in a pet tome. i tried to take one off the gobbo shaman and it wont let me...any help?

I don't recall ATM.

Edit: NO. Sadly you can't get VM2 (Heal self from say dragons) or XM (heal other) from the various humanoids (Minotaur Shaman, Troll Priests, etc). It should be fixed IMHO.

And Zorn lost their monsterquake slot (I think they had it as I recall having a Zorn with IFH put on it).
