Is a sea based map possible?

Post by LaughingCoyote »

One where you navigate mainly by ship or raft, with ship "dungeons" that you can explore, islands with cave "dungeons" that you can explore, pirate ship "mobs"that fire cannon at you, mobile whirlpools that chase you and portal you to random locations, etc?

yeh, tho raft (etc) needs to be enabled in dungeons. It's a server option: weekly has it enabled but all other dungeons it is disabled. I would like to enable rafts on all other servers but I guess a lot of maps will be come broken.

What about having a flag for each map that tells whether or not rafts are allowed?

that's an easy fix, yes, but would be cool if raft worked everywhere, eh

I personally dont know how many maps would become broken, but it'd be a way to fix not being able to grab drops on water. Thats been a pain in the ass for years now.

My suggestion is to enable rafts on all maps and let the comunity figure out which maps are broken and if they can be fixed. I guess most can be fixed by bar-fea, or maybe tweak how meta-mapped regions work. Aside from using ladders and teleporters you can walk from on region into another region (which is not used in any map to my knowlage). If it is possible to restric the later, most maps should be fine with rafts.

Is lost jungle the map with scripted boat ride? That may give problems if you allowed players to raft in it. Would it be possible have a "no rafting" flag that can be applied to certain regions rather than the whole map?

Had a similar idea with wading and swimming. Not wanting to complicate things but different depths, currents, heavy rapids, whirlpools, undertows and stray waves plus winds can make a difference. I also thought underwater swimming maps and cloud maps would be cool.

Yeah, some maps might become way easier.

How much riffing (aka plagiarising) can I do off Treasure Island, Peter Pan, Pirates vs Ninjas, Pirates of the Caribbean, Sinbad, etc?

Also, can ship-in-a-bottle work in maps? Cause it doesnt atm. :(

And is there any reason why moving whirlpools/maelstroms cant be implemented?

I had thought about trying to make a sea based map. Main idea is to have a large archipelago with many islands and different content in each one, as well as adding a bit of backstory to it or something. Super ambitious but I'll probably do some stuff for fun and if I ever end up with some sort of finished product I'll show it.

Also, is it possible to have map entrances around an island? So you approach an island in the main map, and it ports you into a mini map with an enlarged island? Then hit the map boundary of that island map to exit back into the main map?

Ched correctly noted we would need a palm tree and a cannon sprite. Some first attempts at a Palm tree sprite for EUO.

I like the palm tree!

Cannon needs better color palette, I'll see if I can make any worthwhile edits.

How far along are you with this season based "map"

does the tree need a pink background? I could help with some tiles if you'd like me too.

Yeah, the cannon sucks. I think I will try making a top down version as that will look better in ships where everything else is top down in view.

Kynt and I are just in the planning/discussion stages, and flaffing around in MapEd.

I think for terrain tiles no pink background - as thats for items so that you can see the background tile.

You would do that with trd-features. just make sure to add some text, otherwise damage is dealt to the player by the trap-door. Afaik you cannot disable the portal-sprite using tel-features and lxy-features do not teleport to different maplevels, though with those you can disable the portal-sprite.
