Shrouded Woods/Outpost (1st map by 1, dev log)

Post by 1[WoWz] »

So in order to get better at MapEd I decided to make two basic 100x100 maps for hunting mostly. These maps were made mostly so I can get familiar with maped, I know it's not a complex or difficult map to make.

So far I added the terrain and monster spawners; there are no chests or quests.

I'll be using this thread to submit recent versions of this map and possibly others as well as ask for help/advice/feedback from the community.

Looking at the picture dump, the map looks pretty bare. Probably more bare than I'd like, but the theme of the map I was going for was a hidden camp inside of a small cavern.

Please let me know if you have any map suggestions or maped tips (I've read most guides but I'll be rereading them).

Leads down to second map 100x100

Edit: Updates to underground map, added above ground map.
Edit: Shrouded woods updated to include some small changes by Lord M.

Looks very loopable which is a + in many maps these days.

Yeah looks nice.

To make the floor tiles have more variation you could try using paintsets.

Otherwise, I like if maps have varying themes, e.g. a graveyard, some keep, etc. or the camp in your map.

Personally, I would avoid long straight/linear open sections.

Totally agree with Keighn about looping being a good feature.

Thanks for the feedback so far guys. It was better than I expected.

Paintsets, ah, I did that manually but will use this feature from now on. I have so much to learn!

Here is more info on the map:
Outer part right now has firey foxes and fire daemons (levels 40-100).
More inner part has shadow warriors (levels 50-250).
Most inner part has dragons, a few shadow dragons, and a shadowlord in the room with the chair and desk (levels 50-250).
A heroic version would make this map versatile enough for levels 250+ as well.

I made this loopable on purpose and would really like to see a map like this go into the underworld for vampires to hunt (only good hunting ground there is treacherous caves level 8 imo). I know what you mean about the long, straight corridors; I may have to scrap this map completely but it was an awesome learning experiences.

Also if anyone wants a copy of the map to work on with me, let me know!

Added some updates to the underground map and added an above ground map.

The maps right now could have more detail added to them but I'm actually happy with the relatively bare hunting grounds a map like this provides. Aesthetics are still important and my paintsets have room for improvement. I'm still interested in more feedback.

Thank you so much guys.

Great maps so far 1.

I would make the forest area a bit more random. It looks too man made currently. I noticed you stated there was a camp, which would explain why there might be "paths". But I don't think humanoids would make a bunch of random paths to no where.

I got some input from Lord M. and he made a couple small changes. I feel like the maps are practically completed so I turned them in and will begin working on other maps.

Bump.

Development of this map has now been continued. Feel free to throw me ideas if you want.
